Contact Lens Exam

Contact Lens Exam

If you’ve never worn contact lenses before, it can seem a bit intimidating. After all, you’re inserting something into your eye! Let’s ease your mind about the first step – your contact lens exam. We will walk you through what’s involved in a contact lens exam and what you can expect every step of the way.

It Begins With Your Comprehensive Eye Exam.  Let Dr. Sober & His Team Know You're Thinking About Contact Lenses
Dr. Sober will first determine your overall eye health, vision and your suitability for contact lenses. Just be sure to let us know you’re interested in contact lenses when making your exam appointment so that we know to allow for extra time in your appointment for the consultation and any specialized tests.

Then, A Discussion About Your Contact Lens Preferences.
If contact lenses are appropriate for you, it’s time to talk about your contact lens preferences. Would you prefer daily disposable lenses or monthly contacts? Ask about the benefits or drawbacks of each, so that you make the best decision. If you’re over 40, Dr. Sober will likely discuss age-related vision changes and how contact lenses can and can not always address these issues.

Next, The Eye Doctor Will Conduct Eye Surface Measurements And Tear Evaluation.
Contact lenses require precise measurements of your eyes to fit properly. Using an instrument called a keratometer, Dr. Sober will measure the curvature of your eye's cornea, the clear front surface of your eye.  Next, Dr. Sober will measure the size of your pupils.  Dr. Sober will also gauge whether your eyes have sufficient moisture to make you a good contact lens patient.  With your prescription and these specialized fitting measurements, Dr. Sober will offer an appropriate contact lens solution for you.

It's Time For The Contact Lens Fitting.
The next step is to fit you with a trial pair of contact lenses. Once inserted, Dr. Sober will examine the lenses in your eyes to ensure a good fit. He will check the alignment and movement of the lenses on the surface of your eye and if the fit looks good, the last step is to ensure the prescription is correct with a few more tests.

How Do I Put Contact Lenses In?  Take Them Out?  Clean/Disinfect Them?
Dr. Sober's staff will sit down with you and perform contact lens training.  This training will show you how to put the contact lenses in, how to take them out, and how to clean them.  There are very good videos available online that show how to do these things.  We suggest watching these videos before your first visit to help you determine whether you will be comfortable with touching your eye, which is of course part of wearing contact lenses.

Now It’s Your Turn To Test It Out.
Your contact lens exam is over, but you’ll need to come back.  Dr. Sober will usually have you wear the trial lenses for a week or two.  After that, you’ll have a short follow-up exam to confirm that the lenses are working well for you, and you can then order a supply of contact lenses. The additional measurements and additional "chair time" for follow-up visits are why an additional fee is charged for contact lens fitting.  There is no charge for the trial contact lenses, nor for your contact lens training, nor for any follow-up visits within 90 days of your initial contact lens fitting.
